BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech cross country hosted their second meet of the season, welcoming Ohio University, Concord, Lynchburg and Bluefield State for the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. The Hokies’ men’s and women’s teams placed second in their respective events, with the women tallying 35 points in the 3-mile run and the men earning 30 in the 8,000-meters. Ohio University won both events.
The Hokies’ highest finisher in the men’s race was Jason Cusack, coming in at seventh (24:16.53). Competing unattached, Tech athletes swept the top four spots. The finishes, in order, were Will Mulherin (23:37.25), Devin Cornwall (23:42.97), Michael Hammond (23:44.67) and Brian Welch (23:55.96).
In the women’s race, Casey Gresham placed highest for Tech, earning a sixth-place finish (17:11.65). The Hokies’ unattached competitors took three of the top five spots, with competing and unattached Tech athletes combining to earn nine of the top 11 spots. Tech’s highest-placing unattached competitor was Sammy Dow, who placed second (16:47.94).
Next, the Hokies hit the road for the first time this season, taking their talents to Charlotte, N.C., on Friday, Oct. 1 at the UNC Charlotte Invite. Events are set to begin at 4 p.m. Go to www.hokiesports.com for updates throughout the season.
