BLACKSBURG, Va. – Seniors Paul LaPenna and Devin Cornwall each earned 2009 All-ACC Academic men’s cross country honors, while Cornwall also achieved USTFCCCA All-Academic status on Tuesday for the Virginia Tech men’s cross country unit.

Both runners received the conference academic award for the third time in their careers, while Cornwall is among 58 athletes to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic recognition for 2009.

Cornwall, a marketing major, was the top Hokie finisher at the 2009 NCAA Southeast Regional. The Culpeper, Va., native crossed the line in 18^th place, and achieved cross country all-region accolades for the first time in his career. He placed 13^th at the ACC Championships two weeks before the regional meet.

LaPenna graduated in December with a degree in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise. The Londonderry, N.H., native ran at both the regional and conference meets, placing 84^th and 45^th, respectively, at each event.

To be eligible for consideration for All-ACC Academic honors, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade-point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career. To be eligible for the USTFCCCA All-Academic award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade-point average and must finish among the top 15 finishers (or top 10 percent) of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
