BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Sammy Dow won the women’s race at the Hokie Open in record fashion to highlight Tech’s final home meet this season on Friday at the Tech Cross Country Course. There was no team scoring at the meet.

The Hokie women captured the top six spots in the 4,000-meter race, led by Dow who clocked a new 4,000-meter course record with a time of 14:24.3. The Midlothian, Va., native came in just under the former record of 14:24.5, set by Marlies Overbeeke in 2002.

Junior Jessica Trapeni finished second overall in the 21-runner race with a time of 14:26.5, followed by sophomore Lauren Lemieux, who finished four-tenths behind Trapeni, in third. Freshman Kelly Kavanaugh placed fourth, while sophomore Lauren Pinkston and sophomore Erin Stehle took fifth and sixth, respectively.

On the men’s side, freshman Jason Cusack earned the Hokies’ top finish in the 6,000-meter, 22-runner race, placing second with a time of 18:50.6. Junior Ryan Witt clocked 18:51.8 for third, while freshman Doug Fenstermacher took fourth, crossing the finish line in 19:04.5. Freshman Tihut Degfae, freshman Ryan Hagen and sophomore Davis Barry finished in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Logan Collins, running unattached, captured the men’s individual title with a time of 18:48.6, six-tenths behind the 6,000-meter course record.

The Hokies will next run in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky., for a chance to earn a berth into the NCAA Championships, held on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
