Hokie women place second at Blue Ridge Open

BOONE, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s cross country squad earned a second-place team finish on Friday at the Blue Ridge Open on the Don Kennedy Trails in Boone, N.C., racking up 104 points in the effort.

Junior Jessica Trapeni led the Hokies, finishing 14th overall out of 133 athletes, and eighth in the team competition, crossing the line in 18:20.26. Sophomore Sammy Dow followed close behind, placing 18th overall and 12th in the team standings, with a time of 18:33.49. Freshman Kelly Kavanaugh and sophomore Lauren Lemieux recorded back-to-back finishes, placing 28th and 29th overall, respectively. Sophomore Erin Stehle rounded out the Hokie team scoring with a 67th-overall placing, finishing 49th in the team total.

As a squad, the Hokies totaled 104 points to finish second out of 15 teams. Duke won the meet with 18 points. UNC Wilmington took third, tallying 115 points, followed by Appalachian State and VMI in fourth and fifth, respectively. The host Mountaineers earned 139 points, while the Keydets totaled 146 points at the meet.

Four Hokie men competed as individuals in the meet, but did not count toward the team scoring in the men’s race. Freshman Tihut Degfae clocked in first for the Hokies in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 26:07.33. Degfae took 35th overall among 154 runners. Fellow freshman Jared Berman came in right behind Degfae in 36th with a time of 26:07.64. Freshman Ryan Hagen and sophomore Davis Barry finished 48th and 95th, respectively, to round out the Hokie competitors at the meet.

The rest of the Tech men’s squad will compete in the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival tomorrow morning in Fayetteville, Ark. The men’s race is set to kick off at 9:45 a.m. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
