QUICK HITTERS
The weekend slate and more:
Virginia Tech heads to Florida for a five-game, seven-day road trip in DeLand that begins on Friday at the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational against the host school Hatters at 7 p.m. After the three-game weekend tournament, the Hokies will stay in DeLand and play two more midweek contests. All five games in DeLand will be played at Melching Field at Conrad Park.

Playing in the Sunshine State and DeLand: In its history, Tech has played 145 times in the state of Florida and own a 48-97 overall record, but that includes a 34-33 mark in neutral site games. The Hokies' last 18 games here were ACC contests and they've gone just 2-16 combined at Miami (1-11) and Florida State (1-5). Tech's last win in the state was in Tallahassee, 8-3, on March 27, 2015.
The Hokies last game in the Sunshine State against a non-ACC opponent was a 14-2 victory at Florida Atlantic on March 8, 2011, while their last neutral site game was a 5-4 loss to Maryland at the 2005 ACC Baseball Championship.
In DeLand, overall the Hokies are 14-12, but own a 13-5 mark in neutral site games played here. In its history, Tech played seven games (5-2) here in 1980 (March 24-28), eight games (3-5) in 1986 (March 26-31), eight games (5-3) in 1994 (March 7-12) and three games (1-2) in 2004 (Feb. 27-29).

Hokies against the field: All-time, Tech owns just a 1-7 mark against Stetson (all in DeLand) with its only win on March 31, 1986 (5-2), while they are 2-2 against Purdue, ironically the two wins came here in 1994. The Hokies are winless in three games versus Central Michigan - two in Winter Park, Florida and the other in the NCAA Mideast Regional in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Tech won its only game ever against Wagner in Blacksburg in 2012.

Tech walks it off: In his first home game as Tech head coach, John Szefc saw his team win in walk-off fashion in extra innings against Radford, 3-2 in 12 frames on Tuesday. In the last 10 seasons, the Hokies have had 27 walk-off wins - seven during the 2012 season and just one last year. The earliest walk-off in that span (by date) was Feb. 25, 2012 - Chad Morgan sac fly in the bottom of the ninth gave Tech a 4-3 win over Iowa in Conway, South Carolina. That game was No. 8 of the season.

Hokies playing Free Baseball: Just eight games in, Tech has already played two extra-inning games, going 1-1. The 12-inning affair Tuesday night was the longest in terms of innings since a 4-3 win over Clemson on March 22, 2015. Last year, the Hokies went 1-5 in six free baseball games, while going 2-0 in 2016, 2-2 in 2015 and 3-3-1 during the 2014 campaign. Back in 2015, Tech played two extra-inning games before the month of March - Feb. 23 vs. Rider (L, 4-3, 12) and Feb. 28 vs. Toledo (W, 1-0, 10).
