BLACKSBURG – Looking to sweep a four-game series for the first time since the 2012 season, Virginia Tech held an early 2-1 advantage, but the visiting Quinnipiac Bobcats exploited several Hokie errors and were able to hold on late for a 4-2 win on Sunday afternoon at English Field.
The final three runs the Bobcats scored were all unearned as Tech committed a team-high four errors in the game. However, in the eighth and ninth, the Hokies had runners at first and second with no outs, but Quinnipiac ended both threats with double plays to get the win.
Taylor Luciani improved to 2-0 with the win, while Alex Vargas tossed the final two frames to get his second save. Jon Woodcock, now 1-2, suffered the loss.
How the runs were scored
- Quinnipiac (4-4) took its first lead in the series on an RBI double by Louis Iannotti that scored Matthew Batten in the first.
- Tech (8-4) responded in the home half with two runs, as Max Ponzurick drove home two with a single that scored Ryan Tufts and Tom Stoffel.
- The Bobcats put two unearned runs on the board in the fourth, thanks to a pair of Hokie errors. Ben Gibson plated one on a sacrifice fly. They added a third in the eighth when Batten scampered home from third after an errant throw to first.
Inside the Box
- Tufts has scored a run in three straight games.
- Stoffel had his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
- Ponzurick registered his fourth multi-RBI contest in the last seven games and has reached base in 11 straight games.
- Anderson notched his second multi-hit game of the year and hit his third double in four games.
- Phil Sciretta’s hitting streak ended at 11 games, but he did draw a walk – extending his reached base streak to all 12 games this season (the only Hokie).
Additional Notes
- With the loss, Tech’s 11-game home winning streak (dating back to last season) ends. It was tied for the fifth longest in the nation entering the day. It was also the longest at the school since a 13-game streak over the 1997-98 seasons.
- Tech is currently 4-1 on its current 11-game, 15-day homestand, the longest stretch since the 2010 season when the team played 12 home games in 13 days (9-3).
