BLACKSBURG, Va. - Day one of the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships is in the books after an eventful day at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Four Hokies took the court on Friday, with the rest either drawing byes or awaiting competition in the main draw of Saturday’s singles play.
Katherine Butler and Sansitha Nandakumar opened play for the Hokies and defeated Norfolk State’s duo of Liza Gordeeva and Andrea Macchiavello 8-3 to highlight Tech’s Friday performance. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Mariana Silva dropped their match to Richmond’s Anna Abadias and Melissa Kandinata, also by a score of 8-3.
Saturday’s main draw for singles play will include Raluca Mita taking on Delaware’s Arielle Shuren at 1 p.m., Kelly Williford against Daria Berezhnaya of VCU at 1 p.m., Elena Cerezo-Codina versus Kristina Hovsepyan of Maryland at noon, Nandakumar against JMU’s Alex Huie at 1 p.m., Butler versus Nikol Hristova of Old Dominion at 2 p.m., and finally, No. 2 seed Illinca Stoica will match up against Old Dominion’s Ivana Vukovic.
In doubles play, Saturday will bring multiple second round match-ups for the Hokies, including Butler/Nandakumar’s tilt with Maryland’s Oliva Gaudreault and Alexandra Stanova, Francesca Fusinato and Williford versus Radford’s Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver, and the duo of Mita/Stoica going up against Pittsburgh’s Callie Frey and Amanda Wickman.
