BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team won for the seventh straight game on Sunday afternoon as the Hokies knocked off Coppin State, 72-39.
Hannah Young tied a Cassell Coliseum single-game record with six 3-pointers as she scored a career-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds. As a team, Tech shot a solid 39.3-percent from behind the arc, going 11-of-28.
“It’s often difficult to play these games in the middle of finals,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “The team is to be commended, we played very, very hard on defense early and that really set the tone for the game. We can be more efficient on offense. We scored 72 points, but we missed some easy layups. I think Hannah is to be commended. I told her in the locker room that this is one of, if not the best game she has played here.”
With the victory, the Hokies improved to 9-1 on the season while Coppin State falls to 2-7.
Vanessa Panousis had nine points and four rebounds while Chanette Hicks had nine points, four assists and three rebounds. Sidney Cook also had nine points and seven rebounds. As a team, Tech shot 35.6-percent from the floor and outrebounded the Eagles 41-33, including 18 offensive rebounds. Tech held a decisive edge in second chance points at 20-8.
After the Hokies took a 31-12 lead into the break, Coppin State kept the third quarter pretty even with Tech scoring 21 points to the Eagles’ 20. But CSU would get no closer than 17 points as the Hokies maintained a large lead for the entire second half.
Tech started the game on a 10-2 run that was sparked by a Young 3-pointer and capped off with Regan Magarity making a 3-pointer of her own.
Despite only shooting 26.5-percent from the floor in the first half, the Hokies were able to grab 11 offensive rebounds to help them gain a 14-4 advantage in second chance points. Tech also shot 7-of-8 from the free throw line and forced 14 Coppin State turnovers for 11 points. The Hokies outscored the Eagles 17-7 in the first quarter and 14-5 in the second. Coppin State shot just 23.8-percent in the half and only went 1-of-2 at the free throw line.
Tech dropped in 48 percent from the field in the second half, including a 41.7 percent clip from outside.
Amber Griffin led the Eagles with nine points. Janelle Lane had eight rebounds.
Tech is in the midst of a six-game homestand and will return to the floor at 3 p.m. on Dec. 19 as the Hokies host Mount St. Mary’s.
