Virginia Tech hosts Coppin State
Hokies take on Eagles at noon Sunday

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to host Coppin State on Sunday, Dec. 13 at noon in Cassell Coliseum.

THE HOKIES (8-1)
Virginia Tech rolled past Morgan State, 73-33 the last time out. Marking Tech’s first 40-point win since defeating Radford in 2013. Sidney Cook led the team with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. Vanessa Panousis had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds. Hannah Young added 13 points and four rebounds while Chanette Hicks tallied nine points, five boards, five assists and two steals.

The Hokies led from the start after outscoring Morgan State 15-2 in the opening quarter. Tech led 33-14 at the break. The second half started with a 14-2 run as Young knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and Cook added another. Young hit her third consecutive from outside to cap the run and put the Hokies up 45-16. Morgan State got no closer than 26 the rest of the way as Tech rolled to the win.

Panousis leads the Hokies, averaging 13.1 points per game. Hicks is adding 9.9 ppg and tallying 3.0 steals and 3.8 assists per game. Young is adding 9.6 points and 5.86 rebounds per game while Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 7.5 rpg and chipping in 7.7 ppg.

THE EAGLES (2-6)
Coppin State fell to Syracuse 88-56 in the team’s last game. Omaah Tayong led the Eagles with 14 points and six rebounds while Janelle Lane added 13.

Syracuse jumped out to an early lead and was up 20-12 after the first quarter. The Orange held a 37-23 advantage at the break. The third quarter was more even as Coppin State tallied 23 points to Syracuse’s 25, but the fourth quarter was all Syracuse as the Orange outscored the Eagles 26-10.

Lane leads Coppin State with 11.0 ppg. Jordan Swails is adding 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while Amber Griffin is tallying 10.0 ppg. Tayong leads the team on the boards with 7.8 rpg.

In addition to Syracuse, Coppin State has also played the ACC’s Miami this season. The Eagles fell to the Hurricanes 78-59.

THE SERIES
This is the first meeting between Virginia Tech and Coppin State. The Hokies are 23-4 all-time against teams from the MEAC.
