BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team forced 14 turnovers in the first half and never trailed as they beat Wofford on Wednesday night, 73-42 in Cassell Coliseum.
Tech’s defense limited Wofford to just 12-of-42 (28.6%) from the field and only five assists in the game. The Terriers went 4-of-19 (21.1%) from 3-point range. The Hokies shot 35.4-percent and committed a season-low 10 turnovers the entire contest. Tech dominated the paint outscoring the Terriers 32-12 and in points off turnovers, 27-5.
With the win, the Hokies improve to 5-1 overall while Wofford falls to 0-5.
Taijah Campbell led the way and recorded a double-double for the Hokies with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sidney Cook had a team-high 14 points and added nine rebounds. Rachel Camp had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Chanette Hicks scored 10 points and had three assists for Tech.
“It was a little bit of a sluggish start,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “I thought in the third quarter we were able to get the ball inside a bit more and some of the players off the bench Rachel Camp and Sami Hill really generated some points off turnovers to open the game up. It’s been a long stretch for us, six games in two weeks, and the team is to be commended.”
Hicks’ six steals are the most steals by a Tech players since the 2011 season.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, with the Hokies scoring the first points with 7:02 left in the first quarter on a pair of technical foul free throws. The Terriers made their first field goal with 5:35 left in the first quarter to tie the game 2-2.
The Hokies then went on a 7-0 run that was highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Hannah Young and Vanessa Panousis. Tech increased its lead to 13-5 by the end of the first.
Tech opened up the second quarter on a 13-2 run that spanned just over six minutes. The Hokies were able to force six turnovers during the run and eventually carried a 28-19 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Hokies dominated on the offensive side, outscoring the Terriers 16-8 in the third quarter and followed up with a 29-15 advantage in the final frame.
The Hokies outrebounded the Terriers 48-37, including 22 offensive rebounds.
Tech will be back on the court again on Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. at Penn State.
