THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech fell to Georgetown 73-56 on the road Wednesday. Hannah Young recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies in the points column with 14, while Chanette Hicks chipped in 10.
The Hokies trailed by just three points at the break, but the Hoyas had a strong third quarter, outscoring Tech 25-8 in the frame to go on top 61-41 heading into the final 10 minutes. Virginia Tech opened the final quarter with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 12. Tech sent Georgetown to the line in the final minutes where the Hoyas went 8-for-8 to hold off the Hokies and secure the win.
Panousis leads the Hokies after three games, averaging 16 points and 4.7 assists per game. Young is chipping in 12 points and grabbing 7.0 rebounds per game. Regan Magarity is adding 9.0 points while Hicks is also posting 9.0 ppg and recording 3.3 spg.
THE FRIARS
Providence fell to Brown, 57-47 on the road the last time out. Aliyah Miller recorded 14 points and seven rebounds for the Friars. Jovana ‘Yoyo’ Nogic added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Friars led just a little past the midway point of the first half, but Brown closed out the second quarter with a 10-1 run to go up 24-19 at the break. Brown increased its lead to 13 late in the third quarter, but the Friars answered with an 18-8 run to cut it to three with 3:34 to go. The Bears held on to win it, outscoring Providence 9-2 in the final minutes.
THE SERIES
The Hokies lead the all-time series 6-1, and won last season’s meeting 72-69 in Providence. The Friars last win over Tech was in 2002, a 67-61 decision in Rhode Island.
Rachel Camp led the Hokies in last year’s game with 22 points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out five assists. Magarity added 17 points and nine rebounds. Sarah Beal and Allegra Botteghi each dropped in 15 points for the Friars.
