WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team looked to make a fourth quarter run, but Big East foe Georgetown held off the late surge as Tech fell 73-56 in a road contest on Wednesday at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C.
Hannah Young tallied a double-double for the Hokies with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Vanessa Panousis led Tech in the scoring column with 14 points while Chanette Hicks tallied 10.
“I’m disappointed in our lack of toughness,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “Between turning the ball over and not making good decisions on offense we allowed them to just push us out of the way and gave them too many second shots. We’re going to need to tighten it up for Friday night.”
Tech trailed 61-41 after three periods, but looked to make a run in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a 10-2 advantage to cut the Hoyas’ lead down to 12 with just over six minutes to go. The Hokies sent Georgetown to the line in the final minutes, but the Hoyas were able to connect on 8-of-8 to hold off the Hokies for the win.
Virginia Tech got out to the lead in the opening quarter as Panousis and Young combined for a trio of three pointers to fuel Tech. Virginia Tech held a 21-11 lead at the end of the frame.
In the second quarter, Georgetown opened with six unanswered points, cutting the lead down to four. Panousis drained another from outside the arc to put the Hokies back up by seven with just over eight minutes to go. Virginia Tech was up 31-27 with 3:31 on the clock, but Georgetown answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead late in the quarter. A pair of free throws from Sidney Cook cut Georgetown’s lead, sending Tech into the break trailing 36-33. Georgetown continued its run coming out of the intermission, outscoring the Hokies 25-8 in the third quarter.
Dorothy Adomako led the Hoyas with 19 points. Dionna White had 16 points and eight rebounds while Faith Woodard chipped in 10 points.
The Hoyas scored 19 points from the charity stripe during the game, connecting on 82.6 percent. Tech shot 80 percent from the line on 8-of-10. Georgetown led on the boards, grabbing 41 rebounds resulting in 24 second chance points while Tech had 33 rebounds.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday when they host Providence. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum and is the first contest in a doubleheader with the Virginia Tech volleyball team.
