BLACKSBURG - The Hokies set a program-record with 14 made 3-pointers as they pulled away from George Mason in the second half on Sunday afternoon for the 80-63 victory at Cassell Coliseum.
For the second straight game, the Hokies used a big offensive third quarter to pull away from the Patriots as they outscored them 29-14 in the period. Vanessa Panousis tied a Cassell women’s record with six made 3-pointers as Tech shot an impressive 51.9% from deep.
The Hokies, in the midst of playing four of their first five games at home, move to 2-0 on the season while the Patriots fall to 0-2.
“I thought in stretches we played very well. We need to find a way to stay out of foul trouble. We can’t have any combination of our starters sitting for as long as we did at points this evening. Vanessa and Hannah [Young] shot the ball very well, they’re both great shooters and played really well today. Chanette [Hicks] was able to control the game for us and we had great ball movement,” head coach Dennis Wolff said.
Panousis finished with 18 points, six assists and just three turnovers. Hannah Young also went 5-of-6 from behind the arc on her way to 15 points. The Hokies had four players hit double-figures in scoring as Chanette Hicks and Sidney Cook scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Defensively, Tech forced the Patriots into 21 turnovers and held a 29-15 edge in points off turnovers. The Hokies turned the ball over just 12 times while recording 19 assists as a team. Tech also outscored George Mason 32-12 in the paint.
The Hokies started the game quickly as they jumped out to an 18-3 lead on the Patriots with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter. Mason would close the gap slightly, trailing the Hokies 22-12 going in the second quarter.
Tech got out to another quick start in the second quarter, going on a 5-0 run before their shooting cooled off. Up 27-13, Mason went on a major run fueled largely by free throws. The first six points of the second quarter for the Patriots came from the free throw line.
The Patriots ended the second quarter by outscoring the Hokies 17-5 during the final 8:43 of half and taking the Tech lead, as large 15 points, down to just 32-29 at halftime.
Tech started the third quarter the same as the first two, jumping out to a 5-0 run. The Hokies pushed their lead to 40-30 thanks to a Panousis 3-pointer with 6:53 left in the third. In the fourth, the 3-pointer from Panousis set the new record with 7:07 on the clock.
The Hokies will be on the road Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as play the Georgetown Hoyas.
