BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team used a 27-point third quarter run to overpower the Presbyterian Blue Hose in the Hokies season-opener on Friday night, 58-44.
Vanessa Panousis and Regan Magarity jump-started the Hokies offensively in the third quarter as the team, trailing by two, outscored the Blue Hose 27-11. The team finished the first half on a 7-2 run and extended it at a 27-5 run midway through the third quarter to take the lead for good.
During the run, Tech held Presbyterian scoreless for over six minutes and the Blue Hose never came within double-digits for the remainder of the contest. The Hokies are now 1-0 on the season while Presbyterian falls to 0-1.
“I think the first game of the year is always interesting. We were anxious to start the game and were trying to win it on every single possession instead of calming down and letting the game come to us. At the start of the second half, we got ourselves composed and made a whole series of good plays. Credit Presbyterian, they played the match up zone and it’s hard to play against. They did a good job of getting us in situations and were able to take advantage,” head coach Dennis Wolff said.
Vanessa Panousis led the way offensively as she had 16 points and went 4-of-10 from behind the arc. Regan Magarity fell just short of a double-double as she finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Hokies only went 1-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half but turned it around to shoot 6-of-12 in the second half. As a team, Tech shot 40.0-percent from the field while holding Presbyterian to 28.6-percent from the field.
After the Blue Hose scored the first basket of the game, the Hokies responded by going on a 7-0 run sparked by a three-pointer from Hannah Young. Young would score five of the seven points during the run. The Hokies would hold onto the lead and were up 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hokies went scoreless for just over seven minutes, allowing Presbyterian to regain their first lead since 2-0 on a Taylor Petty free throw. The Blue Hose put together a 13-0 run and took a 13-12 lead with 8:24 remaining in the second quarter.
Presbyterian lead would grow to 19-12 before a Magarity layup ended the run. Tech would outscore Presbyterian 7-2 and trimmed the Blue Hose lead to just 21-19 at the intermission.
The Hokies shot just 25.0-percent from the field in the first half while Presbyterian shot 27.8-percent.
Tech will return to action at home on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. as they host George Mason.
