BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head women’s basketball coach Dennis Wolff announces the addition of Bill Dooley as an assistant coach.
“Bill and I have been friends for a long time in the coaching profession,” Wolff said. “We have always talked about one day working together. Bill is a very good coach with great character who will immediately be able to impact the ladies on our team on and off the court.”
Dooley comes to Virginia Tech after spending the past three seasons on the men’s staff at the University of Hartford. During his tenure, the team achieved the highest two-year win total in the school’s Division I history. Dooley has also spent time in the collegiate ranks serving as both an assistant coach and head coach during a 12-year span at the University of Richmond, where he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1994.
“I am really excited to join the staff here at Virginia Tech,” Dooley said. “It’s an institution I’ve always had great respect for both academically and athletically. I’m honored to be here as a part of Coach Wolff’s staff.”
In addition to his collegiate experience, Dooley served as the Irish National Team head coach from 2000-02 when he led the team to the semi-final round of the European Championship for the first time in the program’s history. He earned IBA International Coach of the Year honors in 2002.
Dooley has also coached in the high school ranks, including a stint at Chestnut Hill Academy, where he tallied the highest winning percentage of any coach in school history. He led the team to a 21-4 record and the Inter-Ac League Championship. Dooley also coached at the Germantown Friends School.
Prior to his coaching days, Dooley played at the University of Richmond, where he was a two-year starter and team captain before graduating in 1983 with a BA in economics.
