Hokies to face NC State in ACC Tournament first round

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech will be seeded 15th and is set to face 10th-seeded NC State on Wednesday, March 4 at 3:30 p.m. as the Greensboro Coliseum plays host to the 38th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament this Wednesday (March 4) through Sunday (March 8).

The Hokies enter the tournament with a 10-19 overall record, including 1-15 in the league while NC State is 16-13 and 7-9 in the ACC. Tech fell to the Wolfpack 73-59 on the road earlier this season. Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies with 18 points while Sidney Cook and Rachel Camp added 12 points each. Dominique Wilson led the Wolfpack with 24 points and Carlee Schuhmacher tallied 21.

The tournament features all 15 ACC teams and 14 games, beginning with three first-round matchups on Wednesday. Four second-round games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Top-seeded Notre Dame (28-2, 15-1 ACC), second-seeded Florida State (27-3, 14-2), third-seeded Louisville (24-5, 12-4) and fourth-seeded Duke (20-9, 11-5) will receive byes into Friday’s quarterfinal round.

Tournament play begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with No. 12 seed Boston College (13-16, 5-11) facing No. 13 Wake Forest (11-19, 2-14). First-round action concludes Wednesday at 6:30 pm., with No. 11 Georgia Tech (17-13, 7-9) facing No. 14 Clemson (9-20, 1-15).

The second round opens Thursday at 11 a.m., when No. 5 seed Syracuse (21-8, 11-5) faces Wednesday’s Boston College-Wake Forest winner. No. 8 Miami (18-11, 8-8) will face No. 9 Virginia (17-12, 7-9) at 2 p.m. The third game of Thursday’s session finds No. 7 Pitt (19-10, 9-7) taking on the NC State-Virginia Tech winner at 6 p.m. The second round concludes on Thursday at 8 p.m., with No. 6 North Carolina (23-7, 10-6) meeting the winner of Wednesday evening’s Georgia Tech-Clemson game.

Duke begins action on Friday at 11 a.m., when it faces the winner of Thursday’s first game. Notre Dame opens tournament play at 2 p.m., when it faces Thursday’s Miami-Virginia winner. The evening session begins at 6 p.m., with Florida State facing the winner of Thursday’s third game. Louisville plays its first ACC Women’s Tournament game at 8 p.m. to close out Friday’s quarterfinal session, facing the winner of Thursday’s final.

The winner of Friday’s first two games will meet in Saturday’s noon semifinal game, while the winners of the Friday evening session will meet Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The championship game of the 2015 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

All 14 games of this year’s tournament will be televised. The first, second and quarterfinal rounds will be carried by the league’s regional sports network, RSN. Both Saturday semifinal games will be carried nationally by ESPNU, while a national audience will also watch Sunday’s championship game via ESPN. In addition, all game will be available via ESPN3 and WatchESPN.

Greensboro Coliseum will play host to the ACC Women’s Tournament for the 16th consecutive year. This year’s tournament features three teams ranked among the nation’s top 10 in the latest Associated Press poll with Notre Dame at No. 4, Louisville at No. 8 and

Florida State at No. 9. North Carolina is ranked 15th and Duke 16th, with Syracuse 23rd to give the conference six teams among the Top 25.
