CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team dropped a close one, falling 49-47 to Boston College on Sunday afternoon in a road game at Conte Forum. It marks the final regular-season game for both teams.
“This was our toughest loss of the year,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “We were just too tentative in the end.”
Rachel Camp had 13 points for the Hokies (10-19, 1-15 ACC). Vanessa Panousis added 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Hannah Young had nine points and six boards while Taijah Campbell chipped in eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Hokies got out strong in the first half, leading 6-0 after the first five minutes of play. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes, but Tech maintained the lead and was up 16-8 with 7:59 to go. BC looked to make a run, cutting it down to a four-point difference a couple minutes later, but the Hokies responded with a 9-0 run highlighted by threes from Camp and Young to take their largest lead of the game. The Eagles got it back down to single-digits, but a layup from Camp gave Tech an 11-point, 27-16, advantage going into the break.
BC opened the second half with a 15-4 run, fueled by eight points from Kelly Hughes, tying up the game at 31 with 14:35 on the clock. Tech answered as Panousis and Young combined for three consecutive three pointers, pushing the Hokies’ lead back to nine (40-31) with just over 12 minutes to go.
Virginia Tech was up 43-34 at the midway point, but the Eagles again went on a run, scoring six unanswered to close it to 43-40 with just over seven minutes to go. A pair of layups from Campbell put the Hokies back up by seven, but the Eagles tied it up at 47 with 1:41 to play.
Both teams had turnovers in the final 90 seconds to give their opponent chances late in the game, but neither was able to capitalize. BC had the chance to shoot for the final basket, missing the layup, but grabbing the rebound with five seconds remaining. The Hokies fouled the Eagles with three seconds to go, sending Katie Quandt to the line where she hit both to put BC up 49-47. Tech was unable to get a shot off as time wound down.
Hughes had 17 points for the Eagles (13-16, 5-11 ACC). Quandt and Nicole Boudreau added eight each.
The Hokies were 34 percent from the field on 17-of-50 while the Eagles connected on 20-of-49 (40.8%). Tech held a BC team that averages over eight three pointers per game to just 5-of-21.
The Hokies will return to the court in the first round of the ACC Tournament. Tech will likely be the 15th seed, playing at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 at the Greensboro Coliseum. Seedings will officially be announced later this afternoon.
