BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 8/7 Louisville 69-49 on Thursday night in the Hokies final home game of the 2014-15 season.
“I’m proud of the effort these players have put in,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “It’s not easy to be in the situation we’re in, but they’re coming out here and trying every night. We continue at times where we make some mistakes at inopportune moments. But I'm proud of the effort.”
Vanessa Panousis tallied 11 points for the Hokies (10-17, 1-13 ACC). Hannah Young and Taijah Campbell had nine points each. Rachel Camp chipped in eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Tech recognized its seniors prior to the game, including managers Maggie Childress and Tamara Brown along with guard Kelsey Conyers.
“You have someone who is a quality person in every area,” Wolff said about Conyers. “She’s an unbelievable character person, she’s a good student and a good teammate. As we’ve been trying to get this thing going, she epitomizes the type of student-athletes we’d like to have.”
The Hokies led 7-3 after four minutes of play, but Louisville went on a 9-0 run to go on top by five. Tech got it back down to two off a three-pointer from Young with 11:25 to play. The Cardinals pulled ahead again, taking an eight-point 23-15 advantage with 5:25 to go. Camp completed the and1 play on the Hokies next possession to cut it back down to five, but the Cardinals closed out the half and took their largest lead, 34-23, into the break.
Tech got it back down to a five-point difference in the opening minutes of the second frame as Panousis connected on a layup with 17:09 to play. The Cardinals broke open the scoring, going on a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to extend their lead to 54-37 midway through the half. Tech was unable to get a run going on the offensive end as Louisville rolled on to the win.
Shawnta’ Dyer led the Cardinals (23-3, 11-2 ACC) with 15 points. Mariya Moore added 14 and Bria Smith chipped in 12. Sarah Hammond and Emmonnie Henderson grabbed six rebounds each.
Louisville used its size inside to outrebound the Hokies 36-30, but only tallied six second-chance points while the Hokies had 10. The Cardinals used 18 Tech turnovers for 21 points.
Virginia Tech will wrap up the season on the road starting with Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 22. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
