PITTSBURGH – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to Pittsburgh 53-35 on Thursday evening at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
“Very disappointed in the way we approached the game tonight,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “We started out the first 10 minutes just fine, but after that it was a total collapse on both ends if the court. We are going to need to regroup and play a better game on Sunday.”
Taijah Campbell led the Hokies (10-15, 1-11 ACC) with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. It marks Campbell’s fifth double-double of the season and second in as many games. Rachel Camp added eight points and pulled down 10 boards.
The teams kept it close to open the game and were tied after the first five minutes before the Hokies scored nine of the next 12 to take a 14-8 lead off a jumper from Tara Nahodil with 11:37 on the clock. Pitt cut it down to one, but the Hokies' Campbell dropped in four straight to put Tech on top 18-13 with just under seven minutes to go. Both teams went scoreless over the next couple minutes, but the Panthers were sparked into an 11-0 run following back-to-back baskets from Yacine Diop as they closed out the half, taking a 24-18 lead into the break.
Pitt opened with back-to-back baskets to go on top by 10, but Dominique Powell and Campbell both connected in the paint to pull the Hokies within six (28-22). The Panthers answered, going on a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to pull ahead, 40-25 with 13:22 to play. Pitt took its largest lead at 8:57 as the Panthers led the Hokies by 20. Tech would get no closer than 15 the rest of the way as the Panthers claimed the decision.
Brianna Kiesel led Pittsburgh (16-8, 6-5 ACC) with a game-high 21 points. Diop added eight points and led the team on the boards with nine rebounds.
Pitt forced the Hokies into 18 turnovers resulting in 18 points for the Panthers. The Hokies led on the boards, including 14 offensive rebounds for 11 second chance points to the Panthers’ five.
Tech struggled from the field, connection on just 24.5 percent compared to a 40 percent clip by the Panthers. In addition, Pitt tallied five three-pointers while the Hokies knocked down two.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Feb. 15 when they host No. 23/22 Syracuse. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
