BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team trailed by just three at the break, but No. 13/11 North Carolina used a strong second half to move past the Hokies, 74-52 on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum, in Blacksburg, Virginia.
“I thought we played a good first half and extremely hard the entire game,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “We need to figure out a way to not turn the ball over and finish around the basket. The kids are trying, but we’re still shooting ourselves in the foot in both of those areas.”
Samantha Hill led the Hokies (10-14, 1-10 ACC) with 11 points while grabbing six rebounds. Taijah Campbell tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sidney Cook added nine points and six boards.
UNC got out to the lead early in the first half and was up by seven after six and a half minutes of play. The Hokies kept it close, tying it up 18-18 off a layup from Cook with 7:34 on the clock. UNC again pulled ahead, putting some distance to take a 10-point, 36-26 advantage with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Tech responded, closing it out on a 7-0 run to cut it the Heels’ lead to 36-33 going into the break.
North Carolina opened the second half with a 20-4 run to go on top 56-37 in the opening nine minutes. The Hokies were unable to get anything going on the offensive side as the Heels held Tech to just 19 points in the second frame.
Virginia Tech shot well in the opening half, connecting on 41.7 percent, but was held to 23.3 percent in the second half. The story was opposite for the Heels who connected on 36.7 in the first and 41.9 in the second.
The Hokies won the battle on the boards, outrebounding the Heels 44-36, but UNC won in the turnover column, forcing 27 resulting in 22 points.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 12 when the Hokies travel to Pittsburgh for a 7 p.m. game at Petersen Events Center.
