THE HOKIES (10-13, 1-9 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell in a close one at Miami the last time out. Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies with 12 points. Taijah Campbell dropped in 10 points while Sidney Cook had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Hokes and ‘Canes both got off to a slow start in the opening half as the two teams combined for 24 points at the break with Miami holding the 16-8 lead. In the second half, the Hokies came out and outscored the Hurricanes 31-26. Tech trailed by three in the final seconds, and had a chance to tie it up as time was winding down. The Hokies’ attempt fell just short of falling as Miami held on to win.
Panousis leads the Hokies on the season in scoring with 13.9 points per game (16th in the ACC) and handing out 3.5 assists per game to rank ninth in the conference. The sophomore guard is also third on the ACC list for three-pointers made, averaging 2.5. Rachel Camp is chipping in 13.6 ppg. Campbell leads the team with 6.6 rebounds (14th most in the league) while adding 7.3 ppg. Cook’s 6.2 rpg is good for 19th in the conference.
THE TAR HEELS (18-5, 5-4 ACC)
North Carolina fell to Syracuse 61-56 the last time out. Stephanie Mavunga led the Heels with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Allisha Gray chipped in 12 points and Jessica Washington tallied 10.
UNC trailed the Orange 29-19 at the break. The Tar Heels used a 16-7 run to pull within three of the Orange in the second half and took a 50-49 lead with five minutes to go. Syracuse again pulled ahead, but the Heels kept it close, trailing by three in the final minute. UNC missed a three-point attempt as the Orange held on to win.
Gray leads UNC with 16.2 points per game, ranking 7th in the ACC. In addition, she is pulling down 8.0 rpg to rank eighth. Mavunga is adding 14.3 ppg and 9.2 rpg (sixth in the league). Washington is chipping in 6.9 ppg.
THE SERIES
North Carolina leads the series 16-4, but the Hokies claimed a 50-47 win over the Tar Heels last season, marking the first time Tech has beaten UNC in Chapel Hill.
Panousis dropped in 24 points to lead the Hokies while former Tech player Uju Ugoka contributed 13 points. Xylina McDaniel, who has been sidelined this season with an injury, led UNC with 13 points and eight rebounds. Mavunga chipped in 10.
