CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team outscored Miami 31-26 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome as the Hurricanes held on to win 42-39 on Thursday night at BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
“I really want to credit the team for the effort they put forth in the second half,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “We were able to fight back and put ourselves in a position to win it. Unfortunately we just didn’t make enough plays to get it done.”
Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies (10-13, 1-9 ACC) with 12 points. Taijah Campbell tallied 10 points and Sidney Cook led on the boards with nine rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow start with the Hokies leading 8-2 with 11:42 to go in the first half. Miami responded, going on a 14-0 run that spanned the next eight minutes, but neither team scored in the final minutes of the half as the Hurricanes took a 16-8 lead into the break.
The two teams kept it close, trading baskets to start the second half as Miami held on to its eight point lead and was up by as many (31-23) with 11:19 to go. Tech answered, going on an 8-0 run to tie it up at 31 off a layup from Campbell with just over eight minutes to play. The ‘Canes scored on back-to-back possessions to go up by three, but Panousis and Campbell combined to tie it up again this time at 34 with 2:56 on the clock.
Miami went up 41-36 with 33 seconds remaining, but the Hokies again looked to answer as Samantha Hill drained a three-pointer with 24 seconds to go. Adrienne Motley connected on the back half of a pair of free throws on the opposite end to put the ‘Canes up by three. Miami forced a turnover on the inbound, with 17 seconds on the clock, but the Hurricanes missed both of their charity attempts, giving Tech a chance in the final seconds. The three-pointer attempt from Kelsey Conyers hit the rim, but fell just shy of going in as Miami held on for the win.
Motely led the Hurricanes (16-6, 6-3 ACC) with 16 points. Michelle Woods added eight points and had a team-best eight boards.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. when they host No. 13/11 North Carolina at 1 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
