Angie Kelly tallied 18 points while Renee Dennis posted 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Hokies. VIRGINIA TECH 73, #5 OLD DOMINION 72 • 11/30/85 One of the biggest wins in Tech women’s basketball history came when Tech upset No. 5 Old Dominion, 73-72. Fueled by 27 points from Renee Dennis, it marked Tech’s first win over the Lady Monarchs in 11 games. VIRGINIA TECH 63, #16 JAMES MADISON 61 • 1/15/87 The Hokies upended 16th-ranked James Madison, 63-61, behind a 16-point, 13-rebound performance from freshman Amy Byrne. VIRGINIA TECH 63, #14 SOUTH CAROLINA 59 • 2/25/89 In the middle of what was then the longest winning streak in school history, the Hokies upset No. 14 South Carolina in Blacksburg. Amy Byrne led the Hokies with 16 points and 12 rebounds. VIRGINIA TECH 60, #18 SOUTHERN MISS 59 • 2/28/94 Virginia Tech upset No. 18 Southern Mississippi in a Cassell Coliseum barn-burner. Guard Lisa Leftwich, who led Tech with 18 points, hit a key finger roll with 42 seconds remaining. VIRGINIA TECH 83, #19 SOUTHERN MISS 76 • 3/11/94 Shortly after having defeated Southern Miss during the regular season, the Hokies turned around a few weeks later to defeat the Golden Eagles again in one of the biggest games in the program’s history. Tech defeated Southern Miss in the final of the 1994 Metro Conference Tournament. The win gave Tech its first conference title, sending the Hokies to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in their history. VIRGINIA TECH 69, #9 VIRGINIA 62 • 1/13/95 The Hokies knocked off ninth-ranked Virginia in Cassell Coliseum, propelling Virginia Tech into the national rankings for the first time. Christi Osborne (16), Angela Donnell (14), Jenny Root (13) and Terri Garland (10) all scored in double figures for the Hokies. VIRGINIA TECH 75, #24 WISCONSIN 64 • 3/14/98 Tech downed No. 24 Wisconsin in the first round of the 1998 NCAA Regional in Gainesville, Florida. Guard Amy Wetzel converted a school-record 16-of-17 free-throw attempts and scored 28 points to pace the Hokies. VIRGINIA TECH 72, #6 DUKE 70 • 11/17/98 The Hokies traveled to “Tobacco Road” and knocked off sixth-ranked and eventual national runner-up Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. An injured Kim Seaver came off the bench to lead Tech with 14 points and nine rebounds. Virginia Tech has knocked off ranked opponents in each of the past five seasons, including two ranked in the top 10. VIRGINIA TECH’S WINS OVER NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS BIG VICTORIES FOR TECH VIRGINIA TECH 81, #17 VIRGINIA 65 • 11/30/98 Tech defeated in-state rival and 15th-ranked Virginia at Cassell Coliseum, helping the Hokies move into the polls the following week. Tere Williams recorded her second straight double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. VIRGINIA TECH 57, #17 VIRGINIA 56 • 11/30/00 Amy Wetzel hit a running 10-footer off the glass with 3.7 seconds remaining to give the Hokies a 57-56 win over 17th-ranked Virginia. The win marked the second consecutive time the Hokies had beaten the Cavaliers in Cassell Coliseum. VIRGINIA TECH 65, #24 VILLANOVA 59 • 1/23/01 Virginia Tech used a 13-0 run over the final five minutes to secure a come- from-behind win over No. 24 Villanova. Tere Williams led Tech with 22 points followed by Amy Wetzel with 18. VIRGINIA TECH 74, #23 VILLANOVA 67 • 3/4/01 The Hokies made an impressive debut in the BIG EAST Tournament, as they knocked off 23rd-ranked Villanova for the second time during the 2000-01 season. The Hokies claimed the 73-67 win in the tournament quarterfinals in Chanette Hicks and the Hokies celebrated after knocking then-No. 17 Tennessee 67-63 in 2016.
