34 THE UNIVERSITY | STUDENT-ATHLETE SUPPORT | PLAYERS & STAFF | HISTORY & RECORDS 2017-18 BASKETBALL Former Virginia Tech women’s basketball player Britney Anderson returned to Blacksburg in June 2015 when she was named an assistant coach. Anderson played for the Hokies from 2003- 07, helping Tech to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a WNIT berth. During her career, Anderson shot an impressive 44.6 percent from the field and averaged 10.2 points during her senior campaign. Anderson served as an assistant coach at Radford (2013-15), where her responsibilities included scheduling, community service and camp coordination while focusing on wing player development and assisting in recruiting and scouting. Under Anderson’s tutelage, the Highlanders were the Big South’s top 3-point shooting team (.337) in 2014-15. In addition, Anderson helped develop two All-Big South honorees. Anderson was also a standout high school player in the New River Valley, having led Blacksburg High School to the Virginia high school Group AA girls’ basketball state championship during her senior year. After averaging 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game that season, Anderson was named Virginia’s Miss Basketball. Before joining the staff at Radford, Anderson was a corporate recruiter for M.C. Dean Inc. in Dulles, Virginia, while also coaching girls’ basketball at Potomac Falls High School and in the AAU ranks with Team Unique U15, Matrix U15, PSPA U12/U16 for five years. Jennifer Brown joined the Hokies in April 2016 as an assistant coach. She came to Tech after serving in a similar role at James Madison since 2010. During her tenure with the Dukes, the team made six trips to the postseason, including four NCAA appearances. Brown coached Kayla Cooper-Williams to CAA Rookie of the Year honors in 2015-16. During the 2014-15 season, Brown coached Lauren Okafor, who went on to be taken as the 34th pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft. During JMU’s 2013-14 campaign, she helped the Dukes to one of the most successful seasons in program history as JMU tied a school record 29 wins and advanced to the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. The CAA champion Dukes won their first NCAA tournament game since 1991 with a 72-63 victory over No. 6 Gonzaga in the round of 64. In her first season (2010-11) as a coach at JMU, the Dukes won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and played in the NCAA Tournament. In her second season (2011-12) JMU advanced to the championship game of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, and in her third (2012-13) the Dukes were WNIT quarterfinalists. Brown played for the Dukes from 2006-08, helping JMU to a 51-16 record, a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a trip to the WNIT during her two seasons. In her junior season in 2006-07, JMU compiled a 27-6 record, was runner-up in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and was ranked as high as 22nd in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and as high as 25th in the USA Today Top 25 poll. As a senior in 2007-08, Brown was a starting forward on the Dukes’ team that put together a 24-10 record, advanced to the round of 16 of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, and received votes during the season in both Top 25 polls. She earned a bachelor’s degree in justice studies in 2007 and a master’s in kinesiology in 2008, both from JMU.
