With a holistic focus on leadership development, career development and a commitment to community outreach, the office provides Virginia Tech student-athletes with a foundation for success at the university level and beyond. Inspired by the NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs commitment areas, the Office of Student-Athlete Development creates programs designed to enhance student-athletes in these areas. During their time abroad, student-athletes have the opportunity to work with local youth, partner with local NGOs and nonprofits, and learn how sports can be used for the betterment of society. Virginia Tech women’s basketball players spend a portion of each semester visiting local elementary schools in part to play with the children, but also to serve as role models to them. 3,475 Number of community outreach hours performed by Hokie student-athletes +15K Number of individuals impacted by student-athlete community involvement 100% Total percentage of teams that participated in community outreach initiatives LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Through the Leadership Institute, student-athletes experience a chance to connect with their peers, learn from each other, and more importantly, share the student-athlete experience as a journey done together. The intent is to help student-athletes identify ways they can thrive as leaders, students and competitors. CAREER DEVELOPMENT The Office of Student-Athlete Development is committed to educating student-athletes on the proficiencies and strategies necessary to develop career success during their time at Virginia Tech and beyond. The Career Game Plan provides student-athletes with insight into unique aspects of career development throughout their tenure at Virginia Tech and offers stepping stones on their path to postgraduate success. The program has been previously honored for its commitment to serving the good of the student-athletes by the Division I-A Athletic Director’s Association as a program of excellence. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT With the university motto, Ut Prosim , (That I May Serve) at its core, the Office of Student-Athlete Development assists student-athletes in taking advantage of the many opportunities to volunteer throughout their college experience. Teams partner with national and local community organizations and volunteer their time at community-wide events.
