AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team shot a three-round total of 14-under-par 850 and finished in third place at the 3M Augusta Invitational. The event was played at the par 72, 7,005-yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hokies held a two-shot lead after Saturday morning’s opening round, shooting an 8-under-par 280. Tech followed that with a 3-under-par 285 in the afternoon and was in third place entering Sunday. The Hokies finished with a 3-under-par 285 in the final round to remain in third place.

Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot rounds of 68-68-69 for a 10-under-par 206 and finished in second place, one shot behind Greg Eason of UCF. Vincent made the turn on Sunday 1-over-par, but carded four birdies and five pars on the back nine. This is Vincent’s fifth top 5 finish and sixth top 10 finish of the season.

Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.), who had victories in each of the Hokies’ two previous events, finished in seventh place at 210 after firing 2-under-par 70 in each of the tournament’s three rounds and sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) tied for 17th at 1-under-par 215. Senior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) tied for 40th at 221 and freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C.) tied for 69th at 228. This marks Cone’s fifth top 10 finish this season.

UCF won the team title at 18-under-par 846, one stroke ahead of runner-up Texas and four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Illinois was fourth at 852, Baylor was fifth at 861, Houston was sixth at 866 and Purdue was seventh at 867. Host GRU Augusta (formerly Augusta State) was eighth at 868, South Carolina was ninth at 869 and New Mexico and Tennessee tied for 10th at 872. Coastal Carolina was 12th at 882, TCU was 13th at 883, Division II power USC-Aiken was 14th at 885 and Clemson was 15th at 889.

Entering the weekend, the field for this year’s event boasted three of the nation’s top-ten teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Number 7 UCF, No. 8 Houston and No. 9 Illinois joined the 13th-ranked Hokies at Augusta. In all, 12 of the 15 teams in the event are ranked in the top 50 nationally.

Tech finished fourth last year in this event. Competing teams also are allowed to attend the Master’s practice round at Augusta National on Monday morning. This was the Hokies’ final regular season event prior to the ACC Championship April 25-27 at the Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C.
