BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team concludes the regular season on Saturday and Sunday at the 3M Augusta Invitational, to be played at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The event, hosted by Georgia Regents University-Augusta, annually boasts one of the strongest fields in collegiate golf.
The Hokies enter the event on a two-match win streak, having captured the title at the Mission Inn Spring Specatular and tied Georgia State for the championship at the Furman Intercollegiate this past Sunday. Junior Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) also enters the event on a two-match win streak, claiming medalist honors in the same two events.
The field for this year’s event boasts three of the nation’s top-ten teams, as ranked by Golfstat.com. Number 7 UCF, No. 8 Houston and No. 9 Illinois join the 13th-ranked Hokies on the par 72, 7,028-yard Forest Hills G.C. layout. In all, 12 of the 15 teams in the event are ranked in the top 50 nationally, plus USC Aiken is ranked third in the Golfstat.com Division II poll. Three of the last four national champions, Texas (2012) and host Augusta State (now GRU Augusta) (2010 and 2011) are in the field.
Junior Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe), winner of three events in the fall season, will play in the first position for Tech. Vincent enters the tournament ranked No. 19 nationally by Golfstat.com and No. 29 nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin. The ACC Player of the Month for September, Vincent won the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the VCU Shootout and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate during the fall and finished in seventh place last week at Furman.
Bryce Chalkley, a senior from Richmond, Va. will play in the second spot for the Hokies. Chalkley, currently ranked 39th nationally by Golfstat.com and 47th nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin, has four, top 5 finishes this season, including a second-place finish at Mission Inn three weeks ago.
Perhaps playing as well as any golfer in the country, Trevor Cone, a junior from Concord, N.C., will play third for Tech. Cone has won each of the last two events and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Golfer of the Month for March. He is ranked 20th nationally by Golfstat.com and 31st by Golfweek/Sagarin.
Sophomore Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies. Huge finished eighth at Furman last week and was 15th at Mission Inn three weeks ago. Freshman Drew Johnson (Oak Ridge, N.C..) will play fifth for Tech. He played in three of the five fall events and has been in the Hokie line-up in two of the three spring events to date.
Tech finished fourth last year in this event. The teams will play a practice round on Friday morning. The tournament will be played with 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. Competing teams also are allowed to attend the Master’s practice round at Augusta National on Monday morning. Live stats will be available on golfstat.com and hokiesports.com.
This is the Hokies’ final regular season event prior to the ACC Championship April 25-27 at the Old North State Club in Badin Lake, N.C.
