J O H N BAL L E I N E X E C U T I V E A S S O C I A T E A T H L E T I C S D I R E C T O R John Ballein is in his 31st year at Virginia Tech and his first as executive associate athletics director. In his expanded role at Virginia Tech, Ballein serves as the sport administrator for football and baseball and the secondary administrator for men’s basketball. Ballein began his career as a graduate assistant coach in 1987 on Frank Beamer’s first Virginia Tech staff and has served in many different capacities in the department, including departmental recruiting coordinator (1989-96); assistant director of athletics for football operations (1996-2000); associate AD for football operations (2000-15) and senior associate athletics director (2015-17). Prior to coming to Virginia Tech, Ballein worked as a teacher and football, basketball, and track coach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1983-84, and he then served as teacher and coached football, basketball, and baseball at Western Branch High in Chesapeake, Virginia in 1985-86. Ballein graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1983, with a degree in health and physical education. He earned a master’s degree in education from Old Dominion University in 1987 and earned his Doctorate of Education from Virginia Tech in 2006. Ballein’s accomplishments as a multifaceted athlete at Bentworth High School (football, baseball and wrestling) led to his induction into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Washington-Greene Chapter) in 2013 and the Mon Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. Ballein excelled at football and went on to play linebacker at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A native of Bentleyville, Pennsylvania, Ballein is married to the former Stephanie Green, a former Tech women’s basketball player in her undergraduate days and current senior associate director of athletics at Radford University. They have two daughters, Jordan Gray, a senior at Radford University, and Jalyn Ann, a sophomore at Georgia Southern University. #getB3 TTER #ThisIsHome 135
